Lomography - The colors of Chaos
14
years after two Viennese students ran into the Russian 35
mm Lomo camera in the streets of Prague and started
spreading the
Lomo gospel, Lomography has become one of the most
dynamic and exciting niches in early 21st century
photography.
With
their arty, dreamy textures, and warm, sometimes
distorted colors, Lomo photographs often capture the
hidden abstract and chaotic layers of reality. Lomography
can be seen as a reaction to the dominance of the highly
efficient yet cold and somewhat soulless digital cameras.
Natalie
Zwillinger is a young renowned Lomographer.
She has won
several prizes in major Lomo contests and exhibits
internationally. Her best works
reveal a wild, intimate, sensual, feminine point of view

surprisingly, Bill Gates guys
promise to offer it soon.) We know people who dig Netvibes
and others who claim Windows
Live is the real thing, so our
recommendation is to try both and see
which one works better for you.
Whatever your choice may be, there's a
good chance you’ll soon wonder how
you did without it.

Great Women of
the Past: Josephine Baker;
Exotic
Dancer, Resistance Hero, Anti-Racist Activist Josephine Baker AKA "The Black Venus" was an African American dancer and actress who
took Paris by storm in the
1920's with her astonishing sensual act. Baker, whom Ernest Hemingway called "the most sensational woman anyone ever saw", was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906 to a washerwoman and a vaudeville drummer.
She grew up cleaning houses and babysitting for wealthy white families who
told her "be sure not to kiss the baby."
"The Eiffel Tower looked
very different from the Statue of Liberty, but
what did that matter? What was the good of
having the statue without the liberty?"
She entered vaudeville as a
teenager,
moved to NYC during the Harlem Renaissance,
and made a name for herself, performing at the Plantation Club.
Josephine Baker
hit Paris in 1925 and became an overnight success
with her erotic dancing, appearing
virtually naked on stage. She performed in a skirt made
of bananas, often accompanied by her diamond-collared
pet leopard, Chiquita. She was the most successful American entertainer working in
Europe whereas back home she would have suffered from
racial discrimination and prejudices.
During World War II she performed for the
Allied troops,
helped the French underground, and served as a sub-lieutenant in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. After the war she was awarded the Medal of the Resistance and named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
Baker,
who was married and divorced six times, adopted 12
diverse children. She called them "The Rainbow
Tribe," proving that "children of different ethnicities and religions could still be brothers."
Josephine visited the US during the 50s and 60s. When a popular New York club refused her service, she
got into a harsh media battle with a pro-segregation columnist.
In 1975, in the midst of a comeback, she died
at the age of 68 of a cerebral
hemorrhage.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) named May 20
Josephine Baker Day in honor of her courage and vision.

Guy #2: What's this area called?
Guy #1: I have no idea... [15th & 2nd]
Hobo: Man invented the condom so that the woman would stop trying to steal his
